Redevelopment of Mansfield District Centre
SSA was retained by Mansfield District Council and Tesco Stores Ltd to carry out a wholesale redevelopment and regeneration of the town's rundown District Centre, in association with Taylor Woodrow. The project was undertaken in several phases, the first being the creation of a 33,000 sq ft multi-facility, purpose-built leisure centre designed to Sport England standards. The old leisure centre was then demolished prior to the construction of a new 87,000 sq ft retail outlet for Tesco Stores. On completion, the old Tesco store was demolished to make room for 27,000 sq ft of new shop units in a variety of sizes from 1500 sq ft to 18,000 sq ft. All work had to be sensitively managed as the location was adjacent to a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), and there was much consultation with the Local Authority and residents to ensure the new development would fully answer community needs.
