Smith Smalley Goes Eco
With many stories in the general news about the need for greener architecture and more sustainable buildings in the future, Smith Smalley are pleased to announce the completion of not one, but three, new food-stores which are ahead of governments plans and already boast a number of ECO initiatives.
A new 25,000 sq ft Tesco store opened in Filey last october, followed by a new 90,000 sq ft Tesco superstore in Bishop Auckland that opened in November. Rated BREEAM ‘very good' the store includes a sustainable structural timber frame and timber cladding. Further north, Berwick on Tweed saw a new £5m 45,000 sq ft Tesco store open. In addition to a timber frame and timber cladding, rainwater harvesting and CHP were amongst the significant ECO components.
All stores have large roof lights providing natural light to the sales floor with mixed mode ventilation ‘wind scoops' adding interest to the roofscapes whilst reducing the stores energy usage. A large number of service driven technologies including C02 refrigeration further enhance the stores green credentials.
The use of structural timber frame significantly reduces the stores carbon footprint; for every cubic metre of steel previously used and now replaced with timber, almost a ton of carbon can be saved due to its less energy-intensive to produce.
These three stores are the first in an ongoing program Smith Smalley are pleased to be involved with working for Tesco.
