Smith Smalley Architects latest Rural Housing schemes officially opened.
Smith Smalley recently attended the official opening of two more of our affordable housing schemes. Commissioned by Sanctuary Housing to design new residential developments for two rural exception sites in picturesque villages in the North York Moors National Park, the official opening signified the realization of a proactive and in-depth consultation process involving key stakeholders, including local residents, the Parish Council and the North York Moors National Park Authorities.
Reconciling the demand for rural housing, with the conservationist approach to protecting our countryside from excessive development can be a difficult and contentious issue. However, the consultation process performed by the development partners for the Danby and Castleton schemes was included as a case study highlighting good practice in HRH the Prince of Wales's "Affordable Rural Housing Initiative" document published in June 2009.
With further commissions, both in the North York Moors National Park and the Yorkshire Dales, Smith Smalley look forward to continued involvement with these challenging but rewarding projects.
