Inspiring Future Architects?

Smith Smalley Architects were delighted to be recently invited to speak at a local primary school about architecture and the built environment.

Ken Earl, a Director at SSA, attended Richard Taylor School to discuss with a class of 6 and 7 year olds "Where do buildings come from?". The children have been learning about buildings and their development through history and the presentation looked to describe the process of building from the brief, through design, to construction.

The children were shown sketches, drawings, CAD images and photographs to illustrate the process and they particularly enjoyed looking at the physical models and manipulating 3d CAD models.

The class were left with a competition to design their perfect house, with each entry to include the content of the house, its location and a design sketch. The standard of the work completed was most impressive and the winning design by Jasmine Tyler can be seen on the home page (image 10).

Jasmine's design was unique in that it ignored the traditional house form, instead she designed a series of linked buildings of different shapes and colours all with individual uses and content. These separate buildings are then set around a central play area and large outdoor swimming pool to take advantage of the climate of Jasmine's chosen location, Portugal.

The event was enthusiastically received and most enjoyable, could we have uncovered architectural talent of the future ? We hope so.
